Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirms plans for $250 note with Donald Trump’s face
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday took citizens by surprise by stating that there is “proposed legislation in front of the House, in front of the Senate to change the [law] so that a living person, Donald J. Trump, could be on a $250 bill” to mark the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.
As per the secretary, at present, there are two mandates for US currency: first, that “no living person can be on US currency, and the currency must say, In God we trust.” He then added that authorizing the new currency is in the hands of lawmakers on “Capitol Hill,” but they have “created the bill” because “we have to be prepared,” per Associated Press. “At Treasury, we prepare things in advance. So we have prepared in advance that if the legislation is passed, but we will stick to the law,” the senator added.
Soon after, the video posted by influencer Nick Sortor gained more than a million views, drawing a range of reactions from netizens. A person commented, “I’m sure there’s no serious intention to do this, but what a troll!.” Another user mentioned, “No thanks, we’ll wait till the end of his term.” A third added, “stick to the law” while actively trying to change the law to put yourself on money.” While another individual said, “The man isn’t even on the bill yet and already has his face on the money printer what’s next, Trump on Mount Rushmore by 2026?.”
