Pennsylvania city officials are slamming one of the newest contestants on Love Island USA Season 8. Their city is down a cop, all because this man reportedly ditched his career for the show. Here’s what Mayor J. Williams Reynolds had to say about that.
A Pennsylvania mayor is having his say on the latest Love Island USA Islander
When Love Island USA premieres tonight, viewers will meet Sean Reifel, one of the islanders selected for this cast. Sean joined the Bethlehem Police Department in 2025. But he recently resigned, all for a shot at love on this series.
In his introduction packet, which Sean recently shared online, he said, “I love my job. It’s super cool. You feel like you made a difference.” But Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds is not feeling “super cool” about Sean’s decision to leave his career in the dust.
As Mayor Reynolds explained to TMZ Live, “From our point of view, it’s like I tell my kid at the park, ‘If you leave litter there, someone’s gotta pick it up.’ And for us, who are struggling like every city across the country to attract and retain police officers, there’s an opportunity cost when we invest money in somebody, and then they decide to leave after eight or nine months.” Sean’s decision will have “consequences that affect other people,” the Mayor added.
When asked if he felt concerned about other officers following suit, Mayor Reynolds said, “We have a great city. And I don’t think we’re gonna have an epidemic of people leaving for reality television shows. But I do think that, in general, it’s harder sometimes to convince people about the stability and the value of being part of a job that you’re connected to in the community.”
“What’s best for you next week might not be best for you five, 10 years down the road,” Mayor Reynolds stressed. So, hopefully this gamble pays off for Sean.
Love Island USA Season 8 premieres tonight, Tuesday, June 2, at 9 p.m. ET on Peacock.
