Scott Pelley fired by CBS after heated staff meeting
Scott Pelley, the former CBS reporter, has reportedly received a termination letter, creating a major buzz online. Nick Bilton has just been appointed as the new head of 60 Minutes. On Monday, a meeting was held that brought together the staff of 60 Minutes. While Bilton hoped for the introductory meeting to go smoothly, things reportedly went south when Pelley became involved in a heated argument.
During the meeting, Pelley reportedly voiced his opinions openly, accusing Bari Weiss of ruining the show. In addition, he allegedly said that Bilton had “slender qualifications” for the job (via CBS News). Reports suggest that he questioned why Simon, Alfonsi, and Vega were let go and asked how things would improve moving forward. Furthermore, the meeting reportedly ended prematurely.
Hours after the confrontation with the new boss, Pelley’s contract was reportedly terminated. A post shared by journalist Dylan Byers featured the termination letter. In the letter, Bilton noted that he feels grateful to be part of 60 Minutes.” He further mentioned that he thanks all the team members who contributed to building the show. Bilton also stated that he wishes to learn from the veterans.
He wrote in the termination letter that he had invited Pelley over for dinner, which he declined. However, what disappointed him more, according to the letter, was that Pelley allegedly chose an “ambush” instead.
“Yesterday, you hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt,” the letter stated. It further added that the way he acted in front of the staff in an allegedly hostile manner showed that he was no longer interested in working constructively at CBS.
