A professional dancer is opening up about his upbringing. Ezra Sosa joined Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) ahead of Season 30 in September 2021. Initially, it was announced that he’d perform in couples dances that season and be prepped to step in if another pro dancer couldn’t compete.
Ezra grew up in a conservative household in Utah, where the dream of being a pro dancer seemed impossible. He opened up about growing up Mormon and what that was like for him.
Ezra Sosa is letting fans in on another aspect of his life

Ezra kept his sexuality a secret for a long time. In an interview with E! News, the DWTS performer says that people told him, “I couldn’t be openly gay on Dancing with the Stars.” He made it clear that it was no one on the show told him that. Growing up in such a conservative family and community, Ezra says that dancing “was my lifeline.” He says that it allowed him to be more himself.
As a youngster in Utah Ezra admits, “I couldn’t voice how I felt, and I couldn’t even tell people who I was.” According to the dancer, the only place he could express himself was at the dance studio. He notes how vital the arts are not just to him but to the queer community, especially the queer youth.
Moving forward, Ezra says that he’ll relish being a young gay role model for young queers everywhere. He calls it’s extremely special to see so many in the queer community come out to see him perform on DWTS. Ezra became a full-time member of the show in 2024.
In Season 34 of the show, he partnered with Olympian Jordan Chiles, finishing in third place. Ezra admits to suffering a “breakdown” during a tour for the show. A new season of DWTS is coming this fall.
