When host Andy Cohen asked Jennifer Lopez if she had any advice for preventing children from becoming spoiled, the “Office Romance” star pointed to actions rather than words.
“I mean, they do what they see you do. Okay? So it’s not so much what you tell them all the time,” Lopez said. “Even though I’m trying to download everything I’ve ever learned in my life, every lesson I’ve ever learned, to them right now before they leave in August, I still feel like who you are as a person, how you act, what they see you do, if you work hard, they become more hard workers.”
Lopez added that children often absorb lessons from their parents even when they insist on forging their own identities. “They mimic you in this weird way and learn from you even though they will act like they’re opposite you,” she explained. “Because my kids are like, ‘I don’t want to be anything like you, I want to have my own path.’”
The conversation also turned emotional as Lopez discussed her twins preparing to leave for college later this year. The star admitted she has struggled with the upcoming transition. “It’s an emotional time. It’s been the three of us,” Lopez said. “People have come in and out of my life, but it’s been the three of us. They’ve always been there, and I’ve always been there.”
Lopez credited a strong support system for helping her balance motherhood and a demanding career. Still, she confessed that she never truly imagined a day when her children would leave home. “I just never thought they would not be there,” she said. “I thought, too, that they’re so independent. I’ve given them roots and wings.”
The singer revealed that writing a graduation message for Max and Emme recently left her in tears, proving that even superstar moms find it difficult to watch their children grow up.
