Perrie Edwards revisited one of pop music’s most talked-about breakups. The “Little Mix” star recently opened up about her split from former fiancé Zayn Malik, suggesting there may have been some overlap between the end of their relationship and the beginning of his next one.
More than a decade later, the singer is reflecting on the heartbreak with a little more perspective and a lot more honesty.
What Perrie Edwards said about her relationship timeline with Zayn Malik
During an appearance on Jamie Laing’s “From Great Company” podcast, Perrie looked back on her 2015 breakup with the former One Direction star and the emotional fallout that followed.
“Let’s just say there was a bit of an overlap,” Perrie claimed when discussing how quickly Malik appeared to move on after their engagement ended.
While she didn’t mention anyone by name, fans quickly connected her comments to Malik’s relationship with Gigi Hadid. The pair began dating shortly after his split from Perrie and later appeared together in his 2016 “Pillowtalk” music video.
For Perrie, seeing another woman featured in a song she believed was written about their relationship was particularly painful.
The singer admitted the breakup triggered what she described as “serious breakdowns,” explaining that she wasn’t only coping with heartbreak but also intense public scrutiny.
“I felt ridiculed,” she said, recalling how she was constantly questioned about the split and faced relentless headlines.
One of the most emotional moments came when her father saw the toll the breakup was taking on her. Perrie remembered breaking down in tears while her dad struggled to comfort her.
“He was like, ‘I don’t know how I can take this pain away,’” she recalled.
Edwards and Malik first met on “The X Factor UK” in 2011 and became one of British pop culture’s biggest power couples before getting engaged in 2013. Their relationship ended two years later.
Looking back now, Perrie says the experience helped her recognize what an unhealthy relationship can feel like. Today, she’s found happiness with fiancé Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with whom she shares two children. Describing her current relationship, Perrie said healthy love feels completely different. There’s no competition, insecurity, or constant anxiety.
