Lesley Stahl has reportedly extended her decision to remain with 60 Minutes, according to new claims, as the program faces ongoing challenges. Even with her age and the uncertainty surrounding CBS, Stahl has said she remains determined to stay. The 60 Minutes’ longest-serving correspondent is now 84.
Lesley Stahl’s future at 60 Minutes and CBS News is revealed
On June 5, Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim confirmed they would remain at CBS’s 60 Minutes, following the abrupt removal of multiple senior correspondents, including Scott Pelley. In a memo to colleagues, they wrote, “We want to stay and fight.”
As reported by The Hill, they wrote: “Newsrooms are not meant to operate like dictatorships. Collaboration and debate have always been central to how we work at 60.” Adding, “We have been grieving because this whole mess has wounded and damaged the broadcast.”
According to RadarOnline, Stahl has now agreed to a two-year deal with the network. The correspondent, who was born in Swampscott, Massachusetts, began working at CBS News in 1971 and first appeared on the network’s flagship program in 1991. She is the longest-serving on-air anchor currently working there.
The description from Kansas State University states, “Stahl’s two reports from the Middle East in the fall of 2010, ‘Unfinished Business,’ about Iraq, and ‘City of David,’ about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, were honored by the Overseas Press Club for Best Interpretation on International Affairs.” It further states that before joining 60 Minutes, she served as CBS News White House correspondent during Jimmy Carter’s (1977 to 1981) and Ronald Reagan’s (1981 to 1989) presidencies, and part of the term of George H. W. Bush.
As per the website, her first Emmy was awarded in 1983 for reporting on a bombing in Beirut for the CBS Evening News. She is married to author Aaron Latham, and they have a daughter named Taylor.
