Children’s Icon Ms. Rachel Addresses Political Controversy After Detention Center Visit

Rachel Accurao (popularly known as Ms. Rachel) has deftly transitioned to political advocacy. She is specifically fighting for the closure of the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas following reports of poor conditions for families and children detained there by ICE.

Ms. Rachel has defended her position as a political activist, saying, “I am political. It’s political to believe that children are worthy of love and care, and that every child is equal.”

Ms. Rachel continues to hold the line and fight for ALL children – and she won’t apologize for her politics

Ms. Rachel responded to questions about whether she is fit to comment on politics in an Instagram post, saying, “Hi! I have two master’s degrees in education & 20 years’ experience working with children. I’m also a mom & was a public school teacher,” adding, “Research shows that trauma can profoundly affect brain development  & well-being & I’ve seen those effects firsthand.”

Her comments come after she visited families connected to detainees at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)’s Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey, earlier this week.

“I’m in Washington, D.C., carrying 535 packets of letters written by children who are currently detained or have been detained at the Dilley Immigration Detention Center. Today, every member of Congress will receive one,” Ms. Rachel wrote on social media, urging more political evangelists for this issue.

She lamented the state of children at the detention center, saying, “Children need to be in school and on playgrounds — not in a detention center that abuses them! I will update you soon on my meetings with Congress members!”

However, a member of the Department of Homeland Security has contested family separation claims, explicitly saying that “ICE does not separate families.”

Parents are given the choice of being “removed” with their children, or else they will have the children placed with a safe person, as designated by the parents.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MS. RACHEL’S VISION?
