The Lord of the Rings star recently appeared at an open-air cinema in Rome. Addressing the 2000 audience members seated, he described and reenacted a specific experience while shooting Avengers: Doomsday, where he used his dislike for the US President to get into the mood for an action-heavy scene.
Mentioning how his character, Magneto, destroys New Jersey at one point in the film, Ian McKellen recalled the directors, the Russo brothers, instructing him “to look more furious.” He added that they told him to act as if he were destroying something he hated. The 87-year-old further recalled, “So I stood there, and I shouted: ‘Mar-a-Lago!” (via The Guardian).
Located in Palm Beach, Florida, the Mar-a-Lago club is reportedly stated to be one of the most highly regarded private clubs of the world. Members have access to amenities like the beach, pool, spa, fine dining, and world-class entertainment.
Originally built for businesswoman and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post between 1924 and 1927 during the 1920s Florida land boom, she bequeathed the property to the National Park Service in 1973 at the time of her death.
However, maintenance costs exceeded funds provided by the Post. Furthermore, securing the facility proved difficult. Consequently, the property returned to the Post Foundation on December 23, 1980, by act of Congress.
Donald Trump purchased it in 1985, following which he and his family used it as a residence during weekends and holidays. In 1995, he founded the Mar-a-Lago Club, retaining the private quarters and the elegant surroundings.
This club is very close to the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, a renowned golf course. As mentioned on its official website, Mar-a-Lago is a popular setting for weddings, galas, special events, and holiday celebrations.
