American Idol Alum Clay Aiken Says Feud With This Talk Show Host Led to ‘Catastrophic Week’

Former American Idol star Clay Aiken revisited an intensely controversial period of his life, calling his on-air clash with Kelly Ripa “the most catastrophic week”.

Looking back decades after the incident, Aiken said that the moment went far beyond a joke on live TV and spiralled out of control at a particularly vulnerable time in his life when he was already grappling with media scrutiny of his personal life.

Clay Aiken explains how the Kelly Ripa exchange became especially painful because it happened before he publicly came out

The incident dates back to Aiken’s 2006 appearance on “Live with Regis and Kelly”, where he jokingly placed his hand over Kelly Ripa’s mouth while trying to make a point. Speaking on the “Hollywood Raw” podcast, Aiken explained that he viewed the guest-hosting opportunity as a chance to prove he could carry a television show on his own.

OK Magazine reports that Aiken defended himself on the show, saying “that was the most catastrophic week of my life,” and “no one would remember but me because I was the one with the scars.”

Looking back on the moment, Aiken said he realized the audience’s reaction had shifted and immediately asked, “Is that a no-no?” Ripa responded, “Oh, that’s a no, no, no. Don’t know where that hand’s been, honey.”

The exchange didn’t end there. On the following episode of Live with Regis and Kelly, Kelly Ripa and Regis Philbin addressed the incident, with Ripa saying, “There was a lack of respect… you don’t put your hands over somebody’s face and mouth when they’re conducting an interview, even if it’s for a laugh.”

The controversy continued to gain traction when The View co-host Rosie O’Donnell brought it up and called Ripa “homophobic”. The singer said that the comment made the situation more complex, since he was not publicly out at the time.

Nearly two decades later, Aiken believes the incident was never just about an awkward joke — it became one of the most emotionally difficult chapters of his career.
