Jodie Foster has weighed in on one of this year’s top box office hits. The Oscar winner had some interesting comments about the creativity behind Brad Pitt’s F1 movie. Her comments have created a new online debate about the use of artificial intelligence in both cinematography and editing.
The Oscar winner targets the racing blockbuster with sharp criticisms over its hyper-polished visuals
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the discussion occurred during the “Who Owns the Future of Hollywood?” panel at the Aspen Ideas Festival. Jodie Foster shared her thoughts on the influence of AI in films today. While discussing some recent movies, she used Brad Pitt’s F1 movie as an example.
Foster acknowledged the film’s success as a blockbuster hit but also pointed out her concerns. “I look at a movie like F1, and I’m like, F1 was made by AI. Wasn’t it?” she stated. She thought parts of the movie were overly structured, and the dialogue and storytelling seemed unpolished and formulaic.
On the flip side, Foster did not discourage the use of AI in filmmaking completely. She feels filmmakers can use AI to improve the quality of their films in terms during the early production planning. According to the actress, AI should only help to foster creativity and not replace it.
“What we all would love is that filmmakers would be able to dominate AI and never lose sight of that,” Foster added. She encourages filmmakers to put their soul into movie-making even as technology continues evolving across the industry.
Her comments caught the attention of social media quickly. Many viewers agreed that blockbusters have become very predictable. However, others quickly came in defence of the F1 movie, pointing out that its technical achievements were a reflection of skilled filmmaking and not artificial intelligence.
The debate has added another layer of conversation to the ongoing discussion on the use of AI in Hollywood. Neither Pitt nor the filmmakers has publicly responded to Foster’s comments. However, the conversation surrounding the F1 movie and AI continues to gain traction among fans and experts alike.
