President Donald Trump refuted conspiracy theories around Senator Lindsey Graham’s death following his visit to Ukraine.
Denying claims of supposed poisoning, Trump pointed to Graham’s underlying health issues that had culminated in his sudden death.
Trump says preliminary findings point to heart disease, not poisoning
According to The Sun, the president was asked about the conspiracy theories floating online about the Senator’s death, claiming that foul play was involved. Appearing in an interview with Newsmax, Trump said, “To answer the conspiracy theory out there, I’d love to say yes. But I think he had some problems.”
The president skirted past the speculation of poisoning and instead dwelt on Graham’s pre-existing health conditions at that time. “His father died just about at the same age,” Trump said, adding that Graham had “some problems that were a little bit deep-seated and not easy to find.”
According to Graham’s office, preliminary findings from the District of Columbia medical examiner indicate that the 71-year-old died from an aortic dissection associated with arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. An aortic dissection occurs when a tear develops in the inner layer of the body’s main artery. Officials said a final death certificate will be issued after toxicology and microscopic testing are completed.
The timing of the death has sparked speculation around Graham’s death, as he had just come back from Ukraine. The South Carolina Republican had traveled to Ukraine for his tenth wartime visit since Russia’s 2022 invasion and announced during the trip that a bipartisan group of senators had reached an agreement with the White House on advancing additional sanctions against Russia.
So far, the rumours haven’t amounted to anything concrete.
Among those raising questions were far-right activist Laura Loomer and former Congressman George Santos. FBI Director Kash Patel has confirmed that the bureau was helping authorities with investigative insights. He, however, has no claims about the criminal nature of Graham’s death.
Trump had previously stated that he had spoken to Graham just hours before his death, where he had revealed that he was tired, but pointed to no serious issues.
