South Carolina officials appointed Lindsey Graham’s sister as his temporary replacement after the senator died from an aortic tear on July 11. However, the hosts of The View have criticized the decision, calling it the “very definition” of a DEI hire.
The View hosts clashed over Darlene Graham Nordone’s appointment
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darlene Graham Nordone as Graham’s interim replacement on July 13, calling her his “darling little sister” who would continue his work, reports BBC.
On a recent episode of The View, Alyssa Farah Griffin said the appointment did not register on her “rage odometer,” according to The Wrap. The 37-year-old political strategist and television personality pointed out that the position was not especially desirable because Graham was up for re-election in this year’s midterms, meaning whoever took the seat would immediately face a contested race.
Sunny Hostin, however, voiced her disapproval of the decision, saying, “I don’t love it,” in response to Graham’s sister temporarily taking over the role. Hostin argued that the appointment of Graham’s sister as senator was “fundamentally wrong,” saying the state should have elected its first female U.S. senator rather than appointing one. She said that Graham’s sister would become the first woman to serve as a U.S. senator from South Carolina in the state’s history.
Hostin added that experience matters and argued that although Graham’s sister is a certified optician who has done commendable work in her field, she does not believe she is qualified to represent the people of South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.
Joy Behar then questioned whether Nordone fit “the very definition” of a DEI hire, citing her lack of political experience. Hostin agreed, arguing that the appointment reflected everything the Republican Party claims to oppose, including DEI and nepotism.
Nordone previously described her close bond with her brother, telling The New York Times in 2015 that he was “like a brother, a father, and a mother rolled into one,” reports Advocate. Nordone called it an “honor” to temporarily serve in the seat and thanked the governor for appointing her.
