The incident occurred before Thursday’s broadcast and quickly drew public attention. Police later confirmed that they had taken a suspect into custody.
What Craig Melvin said about the frightening ‘Today’ show incident
Craig Melvin shared an update on his Instagram hours after the incident. He thanked everyone who reached out to check on him. Melvin wrote, “Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I’m doing just fine.” He added, “Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow.” He did not share any additional details about the confrontation.
The Today Show released a statement that a man walked into an unauthorized part of NBC’s headquarters in New York City. The man escaped security with a backpack and confronted Melvin in a stairway, the outlet said. Sources told New York Post that the man demanded to see Roker and used a racial slur against Melvin. Melvin then called security, and the man was taken into custody by officers.
The New York Police Department said it responded to the incident at approximately 8:57 a.m. Thursday. Police said an officer stationed at 30 Rockefeller Center received a call about a “disorderly person” inside the building. Officers entered the building and arrested the suspect without further incident. Police also confirmed that no one was injured and that the investigation is ongoing.
Sources told Page Six that the incident unsettled staff members. According to one insider, employees were already uneasy following Savannah Guthrie’s family situation earlier this year. Melvin also confirmed that he will take a previously planned summer vacation next week. Taylor Twellman will fill in for him, while Savannah Guthrie is also expected to step away for several weeks to film NBC’s new Wordle series.
