Piers Morgan appeared to express his disappointment over the development, saying if Burnham did not have a plan or know the key people he needed, his leadership could quickly begin to unravel.

Following Burnham’s official meeting with King Charles at Buckingham Palace, the 61-year-old TV presenter shared a photo of them on Instagram, writing, “BREAKING: The Coronation: Unelected man appointed British Prime Minister by unelected man. He turned off comments on the post, but it received thousands of likes within minutes.
Piers Morgan also shared his views on Burnham replacing Keir Starmer as prime minister during an appearance on Good Morning Britain on July 20, alongside Susanna Reid and Ed Balls. He said, as stated by the Daily Express, “I give every new prime minister a chance. He’s been waiting up there in Manchester for many years, plotting and scheming for the moment he seizes the crown….I have to say, from a political point of view, a ruthlessly, brilliantly executed coup. That’s what it is – it’s a coronation without election, and that’s fine if he, in his speech today, lays out a genuine, well-thought-through plan that he’s going to execute, which will actually improve the lives of people in this country.”
He argued that despite Starmer’s strong election victory, a lack of direction and a clear plan for the country contributed to his downfall. “If Burnham does not have a plan and doesn’t know who the key people are, he’s going to have to execute it; he’s going to very, very quickly unravel. So it’s all on him. You wanted this. You’ve got the crown.” He then raised the question, “Where’s the plan now?”
Piers was also asked how Burnham should approach his relationship with US President Donald Trump. Reflecting on his own connection with Trump, he said they had experienced disagreements but remained friends. “I was texting him the other day. You can do it, but you’ve got to be very thick-skinned,” he said.
The BBC noted that Burnham, a former Westminster insider, will be the first self-proclaimed Northerner to become prime minister since Harold Wilson, who served in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the mayor of Greater Manchester before taking office as prime minister.
