The Vampire Diaries‘ iconic couple ‘Stelena‘ is back on the screen with a new dynamic. Reflecting on their past relationship on a podcast, Paul Wesley said about Nina Dobrev that they had a “fun kind of back-and-forth relationship” and that they “didn’t get along in the beginning.” He also added that both he and Dobrev have long been open about that early friction.
The ‘Vampire Diaries’ stars are close after early tension
Speaking on the Wednesday, July 22, episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Wesley reflected on the early tension between him and Dobrev during their years playing Stefan Salvatore and Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries. However, opening up about their current dynamic, Paul added, “Now we’re such good friends, and I absolutely adore her [Nina Dobrev].”
The comments come after the podcast hosts asked him about Nina and Paul Wesley’s relationship as they prepare to reunite on-screen for the first time since The Vampire Diaries ended. They will be seen in the upcoming Hulu thriller “You Deserve to Know,” in which Dobrev’s character’s husband is murdered, and Wesley is one of the key suspects.
Wesley also explained that the two were intentional about not recreating their iconic Stelena dynamic for the new project. “We feel like this whole Stefan and Elena thing is so iconic and so perfect and, in a weird way, we don’t want to have a comparison,” he said.
TVD actor further added that the pair spent years discussing the right project before landing on You Deserve to Know. “We were trying to find something for years, and then we would not talk about it for two years, and then another, ‘Oh, we should do this?’ and then until finally, ‘You Deserve to Know’ came about,” he recalled.
Wesley, 43, and Dobrev, 37, played the iconic love interests in the teen drama The Vampire Diaries, which aired from 2009 to 2017.
