Meghan Markle Has a Dessert Rule for Her Kids That’s Surprisingly Simple

Meghan Markle has shared a simple parenting rule that keeps dessert both fun and healthy for her two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. During a recent appearance on MasterChef Australia, the Duchess of Sussex opened up about her family’s eating habits and revealed the sweet tradition her kids follow at home.

Meghan Markle shares the unique dessert rule her kids always follow

Meghan, who shares Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, with Prince Harry, said her children have healthy appetites and enjoy spending time outdoors. She explained that they often help out in the family’s garden and orchard at their Montecito home.

“The kids are great eaters; we’re very lucky on that front,” Meghan told judges Jean-Christophe Novelli, Poh Ling Yeow and Sofia Levin, per People. She added that her children love getting involved with gardening and cooking.

The Duchess then revealed the family’s simple dessert rule. Whenever Archie or Lilibet asks for something sweet after a meal, Meghan gives them one condition.

“If they say, ‘Mama, can I have dessert?’ We say, ‘If you can pick it, you can have it,’ ” she shared.

Judge Sofia Levin jokingly pointed out that chocolate does not grow on trees. Meghan laughed and replied, “No, you can’t pick chocolate, but you can pick a nice piece of fruit.”

She added that the family still enjoys dessert after meals. “We always have a nice, as my husband would say, ‘pud,’ ” Meghan said, using Prince Harry’s British nickname for pudding or dessert.

Fresh fruit also plays a big role in the family’s breakfast routine. Earlier this year, Meghan told the outlet that Archie and Lilibet love her homemade “surprise pancakes.” She decorates them with toppings such as blueberries, rainbow sprinkles or chocolate chips arranged into smiley faces. The children discover the design only when she flips the pancake.

She also said the family enjoys toast topped with homemade jam and berry preserves.

She also admitted that busy days call for simpler options. In previous interviews, she shared that frozen waffles, chicken nuggets, vegetables and tater tots sometimes make it onto the menu. She believes there is nothing wrong with taking shortcuts when life gets busy.
