Singer Sam Smith has announced their engagement to designer Christian Cowan, months after their 2026 Met Gala appearance.
Smith has said that the title of their new album, “Hazel Eyes” is a tribute to their fiancé’s striking eye colour.

The couple was first spotted together in December 2022 when they posed with former POTUS Joe Biden and then-First Lady Jill Biden at the White House. The singer performed at the presidential residence in celebration of the official signing of the Respect for Marriage Act. They, however, only made their relationship public in 2024.
The musician announced their engagement to the designer in an interview with The New Year Times. The announcement comes just ahead of the release of Smith’s new album, “Hazel Eyes.” The musician also said the title is a nod to Cowan’s beautiful eyes.
Smith started writing the first track, “Everlasting Love,” the night before their first date. The song, in fact, marked the beginning of their relationship.
The couple made their Met Gala debut together in 2024, wearing matching metallic roses on their outfits. Cowan explained, saying, “Early on in our days, I gave Sam a metal-plated rose. So it was a nod to that moment.”
In 2026, the couple again appeared in coordinated outfits designed by Cowan. The designer spoke about their ensemble. The “Stay With Me” singer shared an Instagram post highlighting their looks.
“This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration, and to my love, Sam,” Cowan wrote on Instagram, adding, “I have always loved Erté.” The engagement announcement comes just three months after their 2026 Met Gala appearance and nearly four years after they were first linked publicly.
The singer had previously said they preferred to keep their relationship private but had slowly become more open about it. Smith also said they were conscious of protecting their love life from social media scrutiny.
