Prince George will attend Eton College after Princess Diana’s original decision
Prince George will reportedly begin attending Eton College in September. The 13-year-old royal will follow his father’s footsteps at the prestigious boarding school. However, his connection to Eton reportedly began with a decision made decades ago.
Royal author Simon Vigar discussed the choice in his new biography, The Four Wives of Windsor. He explained that William’s decision to attend Eton broke with the family’s traditional educational path. According to Vigar, it was “very much a Diana decision.”
“Her brother and father went there,” Vigar explained. He also noted that Eton was closer to home than Gordonstoun. King Charles and Prince Philip both previously attended the Scottish boarding school.
William’s attendance at Eton reportedly marked a significant break from royal tradition. Both Diana and Charles were present when their son began at the school in September 1995. Prince Harry also attended the first-day festivities before eventually joining his brother there.
Eton reportedly became an important place for William following Diana’s death. He was only 15 when his mother died in 1997. Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith previously described the school as a “much-needed haven” for the young prince.
Decades later, William and Kate Middleton reportedly chose Eton for their eldest son. Vigor said the school “ticked so many boxes for William and Catherine.” The couple reportedly explored several options, deciding on George’s future education.
A source close to the family told PEOPLE that George “has always wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps.” The school was founded by King Henry VI in 1440. It has educated generations of prominent figures, including 20 British prime ministers.
