Princess Diana reportedly felt isolated and powerless after marrying into the royal family, according to astrologer Penny Thornton. Thornton reflected on Diana’s emotional struggles and their private conversations during their years of contact. She also recalled how Diana eventually found purpose through helping people facing difficult circumstances.
Penny Thornton reflected on Diana’s emotional struggles
Thornton worked with Diana from 1986 to 1992, offering astrological guidance and personal support. She said Diana initially felt “powerless” after marrying then-Prince Charles in 1981. Thornton claimed the royal also described feeling as though she was “in a goldfish bowl.”
“She felt very isolated and hopeless, really,” Thornton recalled during an interview with US Weekly. She said Diana struggled to seek help from Charles or other members of the royal family. Thornton believed Diana needed to find a way to regain a sense of control.
The astrologer suggested Diana focus on helping people who were suffering. She believed this could help the princess “carve out a really purposeful path” for herself. Thornton said Diana appeared to embrace that approach through her extensive charitable work.
Thornton also recalled that Diana’s unhappiness surprised her during their first meeting. “I had no idea,” she said, describing the extent of Diana’s difficulties. Their first consultation reportedly lasted four hours and developed into an ongoing relationship.
“There were times when she was sunk in despair that this could ever be sorted,” Thornton said. However, she added that Diana sometimes felt her relationship could improve. Charles and Diana eventually divorced in 1996, five years before her death.
Despite her private difficulties, Thornton remembered Diana as charismatic and remarkably warm. She described the princess as “an absolute ray of bright sunshine” during their meetings. Thornton also said Diana quickly rejected formal royal etiquette when they first met.
She believed Diana’s compassion became her greatest strength. Her charitable work eventually made her one of the most influential members of the royal family. The former astrologer said Diana’s ability to connect with others remained central to her legacy.
