Lorde’s headline show drew a huge audience at the festival, which welcomed hundreds of thousands of music fans. Some attendees near the front of the stage had reportedly been waiting since the gates opened nearly 10 hours earlier. The singer made her return to Lollapalooza after first performing at the festival in 2014.
NBC Chicago reported that Lorde paused her set at least three times. The 29-year-old singer stopped the performance to allow security and medics to assist fans who had reportedly fainted. During one interruption, the two-time Grammy winner pointed toward the crowd near the barricade and told security, “There’s someone who needs help right here,” as per Page Six.
According to The Sun, the current heatwave in Chicago is believed to have played a role in the medical incidents. Temperatures climbed to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) this week. But despite the pauses, Lorde performed several hits, including “Royals,” “Supercut,” and “Ribs.” She later welcomed Charli XCX on stage for a surprise rendition of “Girl, So Confusing.”
Lorde also gave an emotional speech midway through her set. She opened up about her concerns for the world and shared advice with the audience. She urged fans to embrace life, explore new experiences, and seek personal freedom.
Lollapalooza welcomed over 100,000 fans to Chicago’s Grant Park on July 30. The festival featured more than 70 artists across eight stages during its first two days, reports The Daily Northwestern.
