K-pop star EJAE has opened up about the one thing that “put her off” during her BAFTAs performance. The Golden creator said something during the performance disrupted her composure.
EJAE claimed Leonardo DiCaprio put her off during her voice-cracking performance
According to The Times, EJAE was about to sing the high “born to be” note when her eyes fell on A-list Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio. She recalled the nerve-racking experience: “The BAFTAs haunt me. I made mistakes. I cracked a little bit on the high notes. Leonardo DiCaprio was [in the audience] right in front of me and he was not smiling.” She added that his somber expression really shook her: “That’s what put me off. He made me so nervous,” she said.
The singer disclosed that she was already nervous about performing in front of such a distinguished audience when seeing DiCaprio made her even more anxious. “It was already so nerve-racking to be in front of all these celebrities, and then I look up and lock eyes with Leonardo DiCaprio? Come on,” she said.
Her voice cracking on a high note at the event is something that still “haunts” the singer. She also said the BRIT Awards a few days later were not as difficult because the audience consisted of fans and supportive children.
Though the singer continues to be affected by the incident, her fans have been more than forgiving.
One wrote, “Just like the movie, her voice cracked at first but ended up pulling those incredible notes. The crowd looked like they were asleep, except for a few people. It’s such a catchy song. I don’t understand how you can’t enjoy it.”
Another quipped, “Wait the cracking voice is actually genius. It’s like in the movie, but then she overcomes it and hits the rest of the notes. Love that they aren’t lip syncing. We need to encourage reality and not filters.”
EJAE is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and producer who has written and produced music for major K-pop acts. She has also gained international recognition for contributing songs to Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack and other global music projects.
