Natalie Imbruglia is opening up about the choice that changed her life after years of hoping love and motherhood would come together. The “Torn” singer says she spent years trying to build the family life she wanted. When that did not happen, she decided not to wait any longer.
Natalie Imbruglia reveals how struggling to find love led her to choose IVF
On the Aug. 13 episode of Begin Again with Davina McCall, Imbruglia spoke about marriage, dating and the road that led her to IVF. According to the show’s description, she spent years trying to create the relationship and family life she believed she should have before taking a new path to motherhood.
Imbruglia said the choice was not about giving up on love or deciding she did not need a man. She made the same point during a June appearance on How To Fail with Elizabeth Day. There, she said it upset her when people framed solo motherhood as something she chose instead of something that happened because she did not have a partner.
For the “Torn” singer, time also mattered. Imbruglia said women can reach a point where their biological clock forces a choice. She said she was grateful that medicine gave her an option that women in the past did not have.
That decision led to Natalie Imbruglia’s IVF journey. In July 2019, she announced that she was expecting her first child with the help of IVF and a sperm donor. She welcomed her son, Max Valentine, later that year.
Imbruglia keeps much of her son’s life private. Still, she has spoken about how difficult IVF could be. In a recent Begin Again clip, she called the process “pretty brutal” and urged women to ask questions and learn as much as they can before starting it.
Natalie Imbruglia’s motherhood journey has also changed how she sees the life she once planned. The official Begin Again description says she now feels that “nothing is missing.” Motherhood also helped end a long creative block. Imbruglia has said her strong wish to become a mother affected other parts of her life more than she realized at the time.
Now 51, she is raising Max as a single parent while continuing to make music. Her latest comments show how a difficult choice became the family life she values today.
