A high-energy moment during Matchbox 20’s concert took an unexpected turn when Rob Thomas almost “killed” drummer Paul Doucette. The incident happened as the 54-year-old frontman was swinging the mic stand through the air, accidentally striking Doucette in the head. The mishap occurred in the middle of the band’s performance.

The onstage mishap was captured on video and quickly circulated on social media. In the clip, Thomas was singing Push and was facing away from Doucette when the microphone stand swung backward and struck him. The blow knocked out Doucette’s in-ear monitors, prompting the 53-year-old to briefly leave the stage.
Visibly embarrassed, Thomas told the crowd, “Every night I’m over here, and I’m throwing this Goddamn thing around. It nailed him. It nailed him hard. My best friend in the world, and I think I almost killed him, and I feel really bad about this.”
Doucette soon returned to the stage with a smile and a glass of wine in hand. He said, “How many times have I told you not to throw that f**king thing? I knew it was only a matter of time. It’s been 30 years. Now, admittedly, I’ve been in the back for the first half of that, and maybe I’ve gotta go back there because obviously it’s safer.”
Doucette later gave fans an update on Instagram, sharing a video of the broken pieces of his in-ear monitor being removed from his ear. After the last pieces were taken out, Doucette jokingly directed “F**kin’ Rob!” at his bandmate.
Matchbox Twenty formed in 1995 and currently consists of Thomas, Doucette, Brian Yale, and Kyle Cook. Former rhythm guitarist Adam Gaynor was also part of the band before leaving in 2005. The band is set to perform at the Utah State Fair in Salt Lake City on September 18. It will also take the stage at the Oceans Calling Festival in Ocean City on September 27.
