Donald Trump’s $10B BBC Case Lands With Judge Who Previously Ruled in His Favor

Judge Jeffrey Kuntz, whom Donald Trump nominated, is now overseeing his $10 billion defamation case against the BBC. The change comes as Trump’s legal feud with the network continues, with a trial currently scheduled for February 2027.

Trump’s BBC case moves to Judge Jeffrey Kuntz as the February 2027 trial date remains uncertain

Jeffrey Kuntz is now overseeing Donald Trump’s defamation case against the BBC in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He replaced another Trump nominee, Judge Roy Altman. The BBC case is one of 17 matters transferred to Kuntz after he joined the court. However, officials have not explained why the transfer took place.

Trump previously called Kuntz “tough and smart” after the judge ruled in his favor in a separate defamation case against the Pulitzer Prize board, while Altman also handled the BBC case at different stages.

Trump filed a lawsuit against the BBC after the network aired the Panorama episode in October 2024 that edited Trump’s 2021 speech. He accused the network of a “false, defamatory, deceptive, disparaging, inflammatory, and malicious depiction” of himself and said that it was a “brazen attempt” to meddle in the 2024 election.

After the lawsuit, the BBC issued an apology describing the editing as an “error of judgment,” according to The Blast. The BBC maintains that the editing does not justify his defamation claims and disputes his allegations.

The president is seeking $10 billion in damages in the lawsuit, which includes claims of defamation and alleged trade-practice violations.

While the lawsuit is ongoing, the BBC sought Trump’s financial records and information about his business ownership. The move came in response to Trump’s claims that the Panorama episode affected his business.

There is no official statement from Jeffrey Kuntz regarding the transfer. Additionally, it’s unclear whether his transfer would delay the scheduled Feb. 15, 2027, trial date.
