Larry David Defends Cutting Off Ex-Friend Over Donald Trump Ties

Larry David had no regrets about ending his friendship with Alan Dershowitz after his Trump defense. The comedian believed his former friend crossed a line during Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial.

The Martha’s Vineyard feud had simmered publicly for years. Now, David explained why he still refused to repair that once-close friendship.

The Atlantic revisited the fractured relationship in an August profile of Dershowitz. The lawyer said his support for Trump made him socially radioactive. Dershowitz had joined Trump’s defense team during the 2020 impeachment proceedings. He maintained that his work represented legal principles, not political loyalty.

The former Harvard Law professor had long represented controversial clients throughout his career. Those clients included Mike Tyson, O.J. Simpson, Claus von Bülow, and Jeffrey Epstein.

However, Larry apparently viewed the Trump connection very differently. Their friendship ultimately imploded during a 2021 encounter on Martha’s Vineyard.

The confrontation followed David’s chance meeting with Dershowitz at a grocery store. Dershowitz later recalled greeting his former friend and asking to talk. According to Dershowitz, David refused and delivered a brutally Curb Your Enthusiasm-worthy verdict. “No. You’re disgusting,” he recalled David telling him.

The lawyer said the rejection stung because the pair once spent considerable time together. David had previously visited his home for workouts and summer dinners.

Dershowitz told The New Yorker in 2022, “Larry David doesn’t talk to me anymore.” He added, “He screams and yells at me when he sees me.”

David, however, defended his decision with characteristic deadpan humor. “I don’t know why he’s still thinking and talking about me,” he said. He also joked about his tendency to avoid real-life confrontations. “And then only if I think I can take them in a fight.”

The situation became more complicated after Dershowitz’s son Elon died last year. David admitted he regretted failing to contact his former friend.

“I certainly regret not [reaching out],” David said. He then borrowed a line from his own comedy universe.

“As I said on Curb once, ‘I think of nice things. I just don’t act on them.’”

Still, David refused to soften his position on the Donald Trump impeachment defense. “He made a deal with the devil. Literally,” he said.

The Larry David and Alan Dershowitz feud, therefore, showed little sign of ending. Martha’s Vineyard apparently remained too small for this friendship’s repair.
