James Blunt has weighed in after online speculation linked him to a disturbing story Hayden Panettiere shared about her late teens. The British singer did not offer a lengthy denial. Instead, he pointed followers toward an article arguing that the timeline behind the theory does not add up.
James Blunt shared a defense after being linked to Hayden Panettiere’s 2009 yacht story
On Monday, Aug. 24, Blunt shared a post on X containing only an eye emoji and a link. The link directed followers to WTF with Dean Piper, where journalist Dean Piper pushed back on the online theory.
The speculation stems from a story Hayden Panettiere previously shared about a frightening boat encounter. She said that when she was 18, someone she trusted led her into a cabin with an undressed, “very famous” thirtysomething British singer-songwriter. Panettiere did not identify the man.
However, the Hayden Panettiere yacht story later drew attention to photos from Cannes in 2009. Those images showed Panettiere with Blunt at an amfAR event and aboard a boat the following day.
Piper argued that the Hayden Panettiere 2009 timeline undermines the theory. Panettiere was 19 and approaching 20 when photographers captured those images, not 18 as she described herself in the memoir incident.
He also noted that Panettiere’s account involved a man she had not previously met. By contrast, the James Blunt 2009 photos followed their appearance together at the charity event.
The resulting James Blunt controversy grew online after the old photographs resurfaced. However, no evidence has established that Blunt was the unnamed man in Panettiere’s account.
Blunt’s decision to share Piper’s defense appears to be his response to that speculation. Another theory surrounding Panettiere’s story previously prompted Diana Jenkins to issue a denial.
For now, the identity of the man Panettiere described remains undisclosed.
