Ice Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. took to X to call out TMZ. He reshared TMZ’s post on X and wrote, “Hey @TMZ can you do me a small favor. I don’t think it’s too much to ask. But uhhhh….Don’t have the RIPS AND BIRTHDAYS THE SAME FUCKING TEMPLATE.”
The media outlet shared a birthday post for actor Macaulay Culkin with the caption, “Happy 46th birthday, Macaulay Culkin.” Jackson Jr. appeared to take issue with the graphic used in the social media post.
Following his comments, online users were quick to react. Many users supported his reaction.
One user said, “They gotta add balloons and confetti to that shit or something lol.” Another X user wrote, “especially when yall handing the RIPs out like candy round this b**ch.”
One user wrote, “I agree. Give him like a fun little party hat in the photo.” One Reddit user also pointed out another publication, adding, “lol Variety (I think? Might be Hollywood Reporter) also uses a similar template for celeb deaths that they use for other news, and it stresses me out so much.”
The media outlet has used the same graphic template for birthday and RIP posts. The template includes an individual’s picture, a sleek white border and the outlet’s name at the bottom.
After Jackson Jr.’s criticism, many online users agreed with him. TMZ has not publicly responded to the actor’s criticism. Jackson Jr.’s comments appeared to focus on the distinction outlets should make between birthday posts and death tributes.
