Pose Star Shares Major Personal Update About Her Identity

Indya Moore, best known for playing Angel Evangelista on FX’s groundbreaking series Pose, has revealed a major change in how she identifies. The actor, who became a prominent figure in trans representation through the role, says she no longer identifies as nonbinary and now uses she/her pronouns. So, what prompted the personal update?

Indya Moore says she no longer identifies as nonbinary and now uses she/her pronouns

Moore shared the update on Instagram Stories on Monday night, August 31, which was later shared on Reddit. On her story, she wrote, “I no longer identify as nonbinary. My pronouns are she/her. Please be kind to me. I may share more later.” She signed off the message with “love, solidarity, peace and gratitude.”

Moore’s announcement marks a change from how she has previously described her gender identity publicly. In 2019, she told L’Officiel Singapore that she identified as nonbinary and preferred they/them pronouns.

During that interview, Moore also spoke about the difficulty of navigating how others perceived her. She said she sometimes accepted she/her pronouns because she worried about being viewed as “difficult” or felt people were not ready to understand her identity outside the gender binary.

Years later, Moore is now publicly identifying differently and has made her current pronouns clear.

The actor rose to prominence as Angel Evangelista on FX’s Pose, which explored New York City’s ballroom scene and the lives of its predominantly LGBTQ+ characters in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Her performance also helped establish her as a prominent figure in trans representation on television.

In 2019, TIME recognized Moore by naming her among its 100 most influential people in the world.

Outside of Pose, Moore has also worked as a model and collaborated with major fashion names including Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. Her acting credits include the films Ponyboi and Father Mother Sister Brother.

For now, Moore has kept her latest announcement brief, saying she may share more about the change later and asking people to be kind to her.
