Tennis star Naomi Osaka sported an Allen Iverson-inspired look in her opening-round match at the 2026 US Open.
The basketball Hall of Famer was quick to respond, saying it was an honor to have received the tribute from Osaka.
Allen Iverson said he ‘can’t wait to meet’ Osaka after seeing her tribute
According to People, Osaka entered the Arthur Ashe Stadium for her opening-round match against Anastasia Zakharova in style. The tennis star wore a custom all-white outfit by Who Decides War. Osaka’s hair was set in cornrows, and she wore an armband, sweatband, and sleeve. The look referenced former NBA Star Allen Iverson’s style as an NBA player
After photos spread online, the former Philadelphia 76ers star took to social media and wrote, “Wow, what a honor!! BIG FAN can’t wait to meet you. @naomiosaka**.”**
After defeating Zakharova, Osaka elaborated on why she chose the look. “It’s my, I guess, my tribute to Iverson. I really like him a lot,” she said. She also noted her admiration for the basketball icon, saying, “For me, he’s a trailblazer. He’s also someone that I look up to a lot because he’s kind of, like, done a lot in fashion, whether it’s on purpose or not.”
She continued, “He’s shifted the way NBA players dress, and I also think, like, the whole conversation about clothes in sports, and also just expressing yourself through style.”
Osaka has always treated tennis matches as opportunities to stand out in bold outfits to make a point on the court. At major tournaments, Osaka has highlighted causes and personal inspirations with her fashion. At previous grand slams, Osaka has had Japanese manga and anime-inspired looks.
The tribute perfectly aligns with the NBA Hall of Famer’s career where he popularized athlete fashion and unhindered self-expression. Iverson’s cornrows, headbands and streetwear aesthetic were deeply nonconformist in his time.
Meanwhile, Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has advanced to the second round of the 2026 US Open following a straight-sets victory over Anastasia Zakharova.
