Benny Blanco Says Imposter Syndrome Kept Selena Gomez Off His Radar

Benny Blanco admitted that his imposter syndrome never allowed him to imagine a romantic relationship with pop superstar Selena Gomez.

Blanco was clueless about Gomez’s intentions even when they went for the first date.

Benny Blanco says he never imagined Selena Gomez would ask him out

Blanco appeared on “The Mel Robbins Podcast” on Thursday and dished out how his mind played tricks when he and Gomez were starting out as a couple. The producer mentioned that dating was not on his mind as he wanted to achieve a lot of things.

He said, “I always wanted to do so much. I wanted to fulfill my destiny. I had so many things I wanted to do, and I realized over time it doesn’t have to happen overnight.”

When Robbins asked if Gomez was on his radar, he answered in the negative. “No, she asked me out. There’s imposter syndrome. I didn’t even think of it. It wasn’t even on my radar as if it would be a date. And then when we were on our first date, she’s like, ‘Well, I wouldn’t have worn this if it was our…’ And I said, ‘Date? Oh, wow. Okay.’ And then I’m thinking about it like that,” he said.

Blanco also said that he and his therapist had developed a list of what he wanted in an ideal partner. OK! Magazine reports that he had a set of specific requests, which included his partner being “age-appropriate” and just being a “nice person”.

He also revealed that he and his now-wife Gomez met 15 years ago. He continued, “We worked together five or six years after that, and then again five or six years after that, and had a casual friendship during the time. Then we started dating a few years after that. Now she’s my wife.”

Gomez and Blanco met in 2008 and were first linked romantically in December 2023. The couple tied the knot in September 2025 in California.
