Is Heather Gay Trustworthy?

With everything that went down on the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 4, each cast member has been put under the microscope. Every housewife has their own way of twisting stories to hold them in the best light. However, some bend the truth more than others and should be called Pinocchio. The current lady in question is Heather Gay. Even though she was brought up on a strict moral code thanks to her Mormon religion, I can’t help but wonder, is Heather Gay trustworthy?

Up until RHOSLC Season 3, Heather often told white lies but somehow found her way out of them. Her greatest tactic was to deflect herself out of an argument as she would nod and agree, then not change her behavior. Heather also throws out false claims when she is mad, like during the Season 1 reunion when she noted that no one liked Lisa Barlow. Heather got into the habit of throwing out hurtful accusations with no proof. But does this make her a liar or just a bad friend?

Liar, Liar

For Heather, her number one major red flag is that she lied about her black eye for so long. As fans will recall, during Season 3, after a night of partying, Heather awoke with a shiner and conveniently forgot where it came from. First, she stated she didn’t know. Then she shared she thought it could have been a rowdy sink faucet, noting she probably head-butted it and fell.

While trying her best to figure out the caper, Bravo flashed back to someone jiggling the door handle. However, the scene was cut before anyone could see who had entered her room. Jen Shah looked pretty guilty as her eyes darted throughout the room in hopes of helping her friend come up with a story. During the Season 4 finale, Heather finally revealed that for months, she had been protecting the secret that it was, as she claims, Jen who slugged her that night. But why lie for so long since Jen was being hauled off to jail anyway?

The Truth Will Set You Free

But in other ways, Heather has been pretty truthful about her life. She openly talks about the work she has had done and how hard it is to own a business. She also wrote her book, Bad Mormon, which highlighted some interesting tidbits from her life, so I don’t get the impression that she ever tried to hide her journey. In fact, she brazenly flaunts her new life under the noses of those who once oppressed her.

I can’t deny there have been moments when Heather has come across as a bit hypocritical, but I wouldn’t count that in the same category as lying. For example, Heather was a witness at Whiney Whitney’s dissolution of being a Mormon, yet had her join her choir and sing Mormon hymns. Also, it didn’t go unnoticed that she was extremely dismissive of Lisa in earlier seasons. But again, none of this makes Heather untrustworthy. It just meant she had to work on being a better friend to these women.

The Verdict

In the case of Heather Gay vs. this reality TV writer, the verdict is in, and the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star is not guilty. I think Heather was just afraid of Jen. After looking at the evidence, the biggest lie Heather told was about her friendship with Jen. While Heather is equal parts shady and likable, what stands out is her vulnerability. The mom is a ride-or-die when it comes to her friendships, and this attribute has clearly gotten her in trouble. Has the fame of Bravo changed Heather at all?

Whitney once stated on an episode that she felt her cousin had morphed the most, and while this statement could be true, Heather is one of the women I would actually seek advice from. It didn’t help her case that she lied about the black eye in the past, and her resolution to keep up the charade cast a scarlet letter on her for a season. However, I dare say that the Season 4 finale redeemed her as she listed all the evidence she had against Monica Garcia for being the troll account Reality Von Tease.
