Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping discussed organ transplants and immortality
If there were ever two people you wouldn’t expect to get caught out in a hot mic situation, it’s surely these guys. But it seems even authoritarian leaders with carefully curated images can slip up sometimes.
Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, and Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, were both attending a military parade in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the second world war.
The pair seemed to momentarily forget they were mic’d up. Walking ahead of other delegates and in their own little world, their conversation was broadcast live by state media, reports the Guardian.
While not exactly the kind of salacious gossip you might hope for, the world leaders did have an intriguing exchange. Putin can be heard saying: “Biotechnology is continuously developing. Human organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become, and even achieve immortality.”
Xi, who was out of shot at the time, then replies: “Some predict that in this century humans may live to 150 years old.”
The pair were joined by North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-un. He didn’t seem to participate in the conversation, but smiled as he looked at the other men.
The Russian president later spoke to the media about the incident, confirming the pair had been chatting about the potential to increase human life expectancy.
