Mary Cosby has always been a polarizing figure on Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Whether it be because of her ties to a controversial church or her insults that often hit below the belt. However, Mary’s reputation may finally be changing. We’ve seen a very different side of her in Season 6. She’s been vulnerable about her son’s battle with addiction, and she even extended a COMPLIMENT to Heather Gay in Episode 2. You know, the one she said “looked inbred” in Season 4. The women on RHOSLC don’t exactly give off down to earth vibes. Their conversations often revolve around million dollar necklaces, business ventures, and who has the most money. Don’t get me wrong, we love them for it, but once in awhile, it’s nice to watch a more grounded conversation. And surprisingly, Mary Cosby has been involved in the most relatable conversations of the season.
Mary Cosby’s honesty about her son’s addiction is refreshing
Usually, the women on RHOSLC attempt to cover up the more sticky parts of their lives. They try to bury rumors about financial woes, affairs, and gay husbands. This trend towards secrecy is what makes Mary’s honesty about her son Robert Jr.’s addiction so refreshing. She’s allowed him to be open about his experience, and she hasn’t tried to sugarcoat the difficult moments. In Episode 2, Whitney Rose asked Robert Jr. is doing, and Mary offered an honest answer.
“He’s doing as well as he can,” she said. “Some days he’s good, some days he’s not.”
Later, we saw Mary and Robert Jr. have a candid conversation about his drug use. She admitted she tried to ignore the situation, hoping it would just go away. It was the most real moment we’ve seen this season. Fans praised Mary for her transparency about a difficult topic.
Viewers first learned about Robert Jr.’s addiction in Season 5. He confessed to experimenting with drugs in a conversation with Mary, saying he considered self-harm at one point.
Mary’s response was kind and understanding. She told her son, “Recognize it, own it and change it, because you can … love you so much.”
Fans are seeing a kinder side of Mary Cosby
Historically, Mary hasn’t been one to extend compliments to her castmates. She’s always preferred insults. Whether it be telling Jen Shah she “smells like hospital” or calling Whitney a “little girl.” While her savage remarks never failed to make us laugh, it’s nice to see a softer side of Mary in Season 6.
In Episode 2, Mary praised Heather for raising her daughters (mostly) on her own. She admitted she couldn’t have survived motherhood without the help of her husband, Robert Sr. The comment arose during a conversation about becoming an empty nester. Heather revealed she feels conflicted about her daughter leaving home, saying she feels sad but also excited for her next chapter. Bronwyn Newport jumped in to say she wishes her daughter would stay longer, which Heather felt was dismissive of her feelings. She felt misunderstood who Bronwyn, who she felt suggested she would not miss her daughter. That’s when Mary jumped in to praise Heather for raising her daughters without much help.
Heather seemed appreciative of the compliment, especially from someone she’s routinely been at odds with. It was a sweet moment, and fans applauded Mary for the kind remark.
