Sean Bean Reveals Huge Lord of the Rings Secret About THAT Scene

One does not simply become a meme … unless you’re Sean Bean, of course.

In a new podcast episode, the Lord of the Rings star has opened up about one of his career-defining scenes and how it came to be.

Sean Bean had extra “gravitas” in this specific LOTR scene for one particular reason

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sean admitted that his infamous line – “One does not simply walk into Mordor” – was scripted at the very last moment.

According to Sean, the movie’s director and writer, Peter Jackson, didn’t know exactly what he wanted the character of Boromir to say in that moment. As a result, Sean needed a “cheat sheet” to keep up with Peter’s changes.

“I just had a bit of card. That’s why I kept looking down,” Sean said of the much-quoted line. “It gave me gravitas,” he added, referring to the many dramatic pauses he gives during that scene.

Elsewhere in the podcast, Sean – who also starred in Game of Thrones – gave his thoughts on the “memefication” of Boromir’s speech. “Movies apply to anything,” the actor explained, giving an example he sees on a lot of football forums. “One does not simply lose to Crystal Palace,” he laughed.

Despite having arguably one of the most well-remembered lines from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Sean’s character Boromir doesn’t make it past the first film. However, he would have had a longer stint if he’d got the role he initially auditioned for: Aragorn.

“Viggo came along and he made a magnificent Aragorn,” Sean said of the actor who beat him. “We had a great relationship together,” he added of Viggo Mortensen. “As characters in the film and also as people, as friends.”

Fans had plenty to say in reaction to Sean’s interview on the podcast. “One does not simply watch a Sean Bean interview without being immersed in complete awesomeness,” someone commented on the YouTube clip, as another described him as “underrated.”
