Forget ballet or flute performances – this Miss World has heavier tastes. Ignacia Fernández, Chile’s Miss World contestant, has gone viral for singing (and screaming and growling) a meal song at a recent Miss World selection event. It was a huge crowd pleaser – even if she did suffer an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction.
Miss World Chile is headed to the finals after her death metal performance
The Miss World Chile talent competition took place last weekend. The event selects representatives for both the Miss World and Miss Universe contests.
Ignacia Fernández, who entered on behalf of the Las Condes region in Santiago, stunned the crowd with her talent entry. As the singer of death metal band Decessus, she performed a song alongside the band’s guitarist, Carlos Palma.
The resulting sore throat was definitely worth it – she earned a place in the top 20 and will compete in the finals on Sunday. She also got a standing ovation from the audience, and gained thousands of online fans.
In a clip of her performance she uploaded to Instagram, people gushed about her breaking tradition in the comments. One commenter wrote: “This makes me so happy!! ? very inspiring seeing a metal girlie in the pageant world!”
Another added: “What pride that finally someone breaks down prefabricated stereotypes about what is feminine ??? This Metal Goddess does represent me!”
Another commenter pointed out that Ignacia had suffered a wardrobe malfunction during the performance. They wrote: “She said as soon as she started the first scream her dress ripped in the back, and she felt air coming through. That’s why she reaches behind her at that moment. And ironically as the lyrics say, ‘the wind blows’.”
Ignacia confirmed the unfortunate rip, replying: “That’s very true! And I never thought about it haha it ripped right before ‘the wind blows’ ???”
The positivity seems a world away from the recent Miss Universe drama.
