Alliances shift each season on Real Housewives, and while the dynamic between the core group of cast member on the Real Housewives of New York remains relatively unchanged, new cast members have a way of shifting friendships as well. The relationship between Luann de Lesseps, Sonja Morgan, and Ramona Singer is ancient history, they fight and make up just as quickly. There is genuine love there, despite their quirks.
But sometimes it takes an outside lens to shape these relationships for the better. Eboni K. Williams observed these ladies in action, Luann and Sonja at each other’s throats one minute, then embracing the next. Sonja gets labeled a one night stand often, and Eboni decided to guide Sonja on a path of self-worth and valuation. Her reaction was appreciative and very moved.
I don’t understand how every Real Housewives of New York fan isn’t a major Sonja Morgan stan. Sonja has brought so much throughout her decade on the show, even though her storyline’s been pretty much the same the entire time. She’s the straw that stirs the drink, with a whole lot of A-list glinted stories to tell anyone who’s listening. And even if she’s falling out of her chair or screaming about the Morgan family legacy, she gets right back up and keeps partying. My kind of girl.
It’s also clear that Sonjarita doesn’t have a malicious bone in her body. This season of RHONY, she’s the only one who understands where Eboni K. Williams is coming from in terms of racial microaggressions and white privilege. Points for Sonja. She’s just too kind for this world, which is why my heart breaks for her that she’s having another rough year of dealing with her townhouse and kissing a lot of frogs. But I hope that now Eboni is standing up for Miss Sexy J, especially when it comes to Luann de Lesseps and Ramona Singer’s petty attacks, Sonja will be coming into her own. And bring back more of her fun-loving personality.
The current season of the Real Housewives of New York has been a doozy, and not exactly in a positive way. The ladies attempt to keep their high-energy vibes amidst the coronavirus pandemic that hit NYC extremely hard. The five apple-holders seem to be on edge, whether it’s family issues or, in Ramona Singer’s case, the calls for accountability amid a racial reckoning and complete political turmoil in the U.S. Sonja Morgan’s drinking a littttle (or a lot) too much and having meltdowns about her past life. Even a new and improved Luann de Lesseps was set off by newbie Eboni K. Williams that turned into a vitriolic feud. And Leah McSweeney is sober again and dealing with a lot of family issues behind the scenes.
It’s no secret that Leah’s had a rough one. She’s receiving a lot of hate, which I can understand, but even Ramona told fans to give her a break. She lost her grandmother while filming in the Hamptons which led to not one, but a few outbursts from Leah. Her half-hearted attempt to defend her friends from Holla Heather Thomson’s slander turned into a whole mess. But I commend her intention — she wasn’t down for the ladies to be buddy-buddy with Mama Heather without knowing the rumors she was spreading about them.
Throughout Sonja Morgan’s decade+ on the Real Housewives of New York, she’s shown she really is the straw that stirs the drink. Sonjarita is the life of the party — whether she’s dancing on a (glass) table in front of Ramona Singer’s 50 best girlfriends or jumping naked in the pool with Leah McSweeney and Tinsley Mortimer. She knows how to let loose, have fun and not care what people think. And while it (and Sonja in general) are a gift, sometimes it doesn’t always work out for Sonja with a Sexy J.
Sonjarita has had a rough past with alcohol. But let’s be honest — most of the RHONY ladies have fallen victim to having a few too many and making dumb mistakes. Sonja doesn’t always make the best decisions when she’s drinking, and the Ramonacoaster is quick to call it out, publically I might add, when she falls off the wagon. It’s why I’m happy to see Eboni K. Williams taking Sonja under her wing — she needs a good friend who won’t ditch her for a date. Or shame her for her past *cough cough* Luann de Lesseps.
There is really so much to love about Sonja Morgan. The Real Housewives of New York star has been a bright light since she joined the cast in Season 3. And ever since then, she’s been trying to sell her townhouse, breaking down about her long-ago divorce and forming a beautiful bond with Marley the poodle. She’s the straw that stirs the drink who is never afraid to say what she’s thinking, especially when it involves Ramona Singer’s antics.
Sonja is having a particularly dark season this year on RHONY. Her drinking has always been a point of contention for her and Ramona, even though all of the RHONY ladies have had one too many while the cameras were rolling. She’s looking for a steady man in her life, and newbie Eboni K. Williams is ready to help her in whatever way she can. Because we know that Ramona and Luann de Lesseps, LuMona if you will, will always prioritize their own dating lives rather than support their friend.
Eboni K. Williams was the first Black Housewife to appear on Real Housewives of New York. Eboni has been busy trying to educate her cast members on racial issues. It’s been a lot to handle.
Leah McSweeney isn’t happy about her RHONY bestie Eboni having a friendship with Ramona Singer. Ramona commented, “What really surprised me the most was my immediate connection with Eboni. It just felt so natural, so right.”
Even though Sonja Morgan might have had the same storyline for her entire career on the Real Housewives of New York, I just can’t quit her. She’s just trying to sell her townhouse, make a quick buck and find Mr. Right. This season, in particular, has been a bit dark for Sonja, as she still grapples with her years-long divorce. She fights with her best friend (sometimes worst enemy) Ramona Singer about her drinking. And as newbie Eboni K. Williams said, everyone, particularly Countess Luann de Lesseps, needs to have more empathy for Sonjarita.
Sonja also stunned viewers this season of RHONY by being the only one in the group to understand Eboni’s point of view when it comes to racial issues and white privilege. It’s a shock coming from Sonja who typically provides comedic relief to the show, but a welcome one. I stan Miss Morgan forever and just want to see her succeed. And maybe be invited to one of her infamous townhouse parties one of these days. A girl can dream.
The Real Housewives of New York are serving up a season of wokeness. The arrival of Eboni K. Williams has been a game changer for this group of privileged women. They don’t seem to understand how to talk to or act around a Black woman. This has already led Eboni to spend many episodes attempting to educate and inform these women. She shouldn’t hold her breath that someone like Ramona Singer is going to change so quickly.
With Heather Thomson out of the picture, there’s room for a new friend in the group. Bershan Shaw is FINALLY making her debut on the show which should be a thrilling addition. How well will she acclimate to the group? These women can be a tough group to break into and get to know. Her connection to Ramona might make it even more difficult for some of the ladies to accept her. Ramona isn’t exactly the most beloved person of all time.
