Could the King of Radio be making his way to American Idol? It seems so as Howard Stern confirmed on his Sirius Satellite radio show Monday afternoon that he is indeed being considered as a possible replacement for Simon Cowell when American Idol’s tenth season begins in 2011.
“There’s not a better job on the planet than judging that f—ing karaoke contest,” Stern said. “It might be possible, we’ll see,” he said, adding: “They’d have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton of dough.”
This seems even more possible as Howard’s five-year, $500 million contract with Sirius expires at the end of this year. So how much does Howard need to replace Cowell? “A $100 million to judge a karaoke contest? Yeah, I would do that show for $100 million,” said Stern referring to a Fox news report that Idol would need to match his current salary.
$100 million a year salary however seems highly unlikely as even Cowell was not earning close to that.
Stern also reveals he would no longer do radio if he got the AI job, “If I do say do myself, I can’t imagine anyone else but me replacing (Cowell),” Stern said. “I mean, I don’t know. How else are they going to make that show work? Who knows how to broadcast and who knows how to be interesting? And who’s not afraid to speak their mind?”

He might be a good fit, but the show may have jumped the shark with Paula leaving, and now Simon and I would be surprised if Howard would want to jump aboard a sinking ship
Would I like Howard Stern to replace SimonCowell…Oh Yea!
I really can’t stand Amercian Idol, not because the hopefuls are bad, since many of them show real talent when auditioning, but once the show’s producers get them – well the downward spiral doesn’t take too long to happen. It’s because the performers are made to become sell-outs once they make it to the big time.
Howard Stern will make the show interesting and give it a great boost IMO, because he is truly funny, with a rapier sharp wit and a ‘down home’ personality.
Simon Cowell is a snob who always looks like he just finished eating a s**t sandwich and then goes on to complain about not liking the bread. He has a mean spirit and no sense of humour at all. He makes it unbearable for the people trying to perform.
The show itself is parasitic, because they make a TON of money off the phone line votes, concert tours and ad revenues, but make it seem like it’s a big deal to give out a recording contract to the winner.
At least Howard Stern can get real laughs, both from the viewing audience and the performers. This will make the show way more entertaining, so give him the cash needed and let the real FUN begin!
if he replaces Simon, many-including myself-will not watch.
They want him to buy the show b/c they know it jumped the shark, and he won’t do it.
People who watch that show don’t like Howard Stern but would probably watch anyway, just to bitch about him. It might be a little less rigged if he does do the show, b/c he’s anything but fake. I think the whole Susan Boyle thing was staged, along with alot of Simon’s reactions, but people gobble it up.
If he does join, it’s too bad they got rid of Paula Abdul. She would have been a good target for him. Maybe I would watch it if he was on. I don’t really care that he’s not in the music business. I would watch to see him insult people.
Howard Stern is absolutely hysterical. AI would be lucky to get him. I haven’t watched it since the first season, but would watch if he was on it. Most people that don’t like him have never even heard him. Rent the movie Private Parts, his autobiography, before you judge him.
Just judging from his message and the language that he uses, not only I will stop watching but we will keep our children from the show as well.
I along with MILLIONS of others would NOT watch AI ever again if Stern was a judge – - or even appeared on the show.
I’D NEVER WATCH AGAIN…ARE YOU KIDDING? CANNOT STAND THAT CREEPY GUY…AND I’VE WATCHED IT REGULARLY SINCE IT FIRST STARTED. UGH..COULD NEVER RESPECT HIS OPINION.
