What would happen if former Dance Moms star Kelly Hyland and Basketball Wives producer and star Shaunie O’Neal joined forces? WE tv seems to have the answer to this burning question. To be honest, it makes my head spin to even contemplate the insanity of it all!
There is a perfect recipe when it comes to reality television that is guaranteed to bring the drama…and the ratings. Combine one group of back-stabbing friends, stir in a pinch of one-upping behavior, add a dash of a competitive activity that adds stress and pressure to any family, and finally (the most important ingredient!), toss in a bunch of sweet and talented kids whose talent and sweetness is only usurped by their mothers’ desire to be the center of attention in any situation. Bake for one season, and you’ve got what is sure to be a staple on my DVR…Basketball Moms!

WE network announced this week that it will be unveiling its latest series which will follow five Houston, Texas based moms whose sons have one dream–to be the NBA’s next big thing. Basketball Moms will follow the ladies as they laugh, cry, hug, and (OF COURSE!) fight while cheering on their boys who play in rival youth basketball leagues. According the press release, “Basketball isn’t just a hobby for these families, it’s a way of life that comes at a very high price.”
The show, which is being produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions, follows a group of close friends who will do whatever is necessary to make sure their boys succeed in basketball, even if it means potentially jeopardizing relationships. As with any good reality cast, the clique boasts a single mom, the coach’s wife (I’m guessing the equivalent of Dance Mom’s Melissa), the party animal, and the shiz stirrer, just to name a few.
The network’s president reveals, “Any show focused on parents, kids and a shared activity has the right ingredients for high drama. Add in the potential of an NBA career and the transformational impact of that on both player and family and you take things to a whole other level,” adding, “We’re excited about this show because we know we’ve found the right parents and players to fully represent this journey in a way that will totally entertain and captivate WE tv viewers.”
It will certainly be interesting to see how boys play into the mix on this show. I predict Basketball Moms will be quite the slam dunk (sorry, not sorry! 🙂 ) for WE!
