Terry & Heather Dubrow’s Daughter Kat Dubrow Comes Out As A Lesbian

Heather Dubrow has one of my favorite families across all housewives franchises. I find Heather and husband Terry Dubrow to be super loving and supportive of their kids. And what great kids they are. Despite partially growing up in front of the cameras on the Real Housewives of Orange County, they seem to be thriving under Heather and Terry’s parenting. Which we witnessed a year ago, their daughter, Max Dubrow, came out as bisexual.

Now Heather is sharing more news about her other daughter. Heather recently sat down with People to announce that her daughter, Kat Dubrow, has come out as a lesbian. Said Heather, “We’ve got four kids, they are different genders, different sexualities, and all at interesting places in their lives, figuring out who they are and where they belong as humans.” She added that it was one of the reasons she decided to return to RHOC. Heather revealed, “I felt like our purpose is to keep those conversations going in other families.”

Terry added, “Coming out with your sexuality is something that broadly affects a lot of different people. We just want people to realize it should be part of normal conversations.” Which is something Heather didn’t grow up with so she puts great value on. She admitted, “I was raised by 1950s parents. They talked about nothing. I had no idea. These kids, they talk about everything and I think it’s so, so important.”

When daughter Max came out privately to Heather, it was the start of the pandemic. Heather recalled, “I guess I didn’t make a big deal about it. She texted me and goes, ‘I’ve got to tell you something.’ I’m like, ‘What?’ She’s like, ‘I’m bisexual.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah. I know. Remember we talked about it?'”

As for Kat, Heather said she “had been talking about her sexuality for a while.” But when she wanted to tell her family, she wanted it to stay low key. Heather explained, “Kat decided to drop in our family group text, ‘By the way, I’m a lesbian.’ I didn’t see it, and I was mad because the dogs pooped in the house, so I wrote back, ‘Who let the dogs poop in the house?’ It was a total mom fail, and they’ve never let me forget that.” I love the fact that they have a family group text. Heather continued, “All I cared about was creating an environment where they all felt safe, comfortable, happy.”

Max points to her parents’ chill attitude as being key while the kids explore their identities. Said Max, “Even if she doesn’t understand something, my mom tries very hard and she learns and teaches herself and she grows with us.” Kat joined in and disclosed of her mom, “She’s asked me trillions of questions that really show she cares. She’s asked me about my pronouns. It’s really easy to talk to her. It’s not like I have to build up courage if I have something to tell her.”

Kat has been out to her family for almost a year now. But an upcoming episode of RHOC will feature her opening up about her sexuality. Kat admitted to mixed feelings about it being so public. “I was really stressed about it.” said Kat. “But I’m really grateful that I have Max as an older sister, that she has already gone through all of this. Seeing my sister be so proud, and to see her be so comfortable with herself, it just makes me feel like I have nothing to worry about.” Heather had some reservations too. She explained, “Even though our family is very inclusive and accepting, of course you worry about what people going to be like out in the world. And on social media.”

Max, who has a podcast and wrote a book about parents supporting their LGBTQ+ children acknowledged, “It’s hard. Being unapologetically your- self, you just have to not care because it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. But that’s much easier said than done.”

Either way, Heather is completely confident in how her girls will handle themselves. “These guys grew up with social media. They’re better at filtering [negative] comments than adults are.” She rightfully gushed, “They’re all solid kids and they have each other’s back. Even if they’re bickering, they protect each other. They always take care of each other.”
