Guerdy Abraira Hopes Cancer Diagnosis Is a ‘Teaching Moment’ for RHOM Viewers

For just a moment, let’s forget the regularly scheduled petty drama from Real Housewives of Miami. In Season 6, Guerdy Abraira has a more poignant story to tell. When Season 6 was about to begin filming, Guerdy was diagnosed with breast cancer. After the diagnosis, she was faced with an extremely difficult decision. Should she continue filming Housewives or sit on the sidelines while receiving treatment?

Of course, Guerdy decided to march on as a full-time Housewife, and the cameras followed her through her recovery journey. In an interview with Blavity, the RHOM star opened up about why she chose to stay on Housewives after receiving her cancer diagnosis and the message she hopes to share with fans this season.

Guerdy is stronger than ever, despite cancer

When discussing her decision to move forward with Season 6 of RHOM, Guerdy laid out a few solid reasons for wanting to show her story to the world. First and foremost, it was a family-focused decision.

“To be honest, I just went with it in stride and I went with the flow because I had no other choice once I made the decision to shoot, you know? It was not only just a decision for myself but also for my family, right,” she said.

In addition to considering her family, Guerdy reflected on all of the people who could benefit from seeing her story. Even if it’s just a reminder to get a mammogram, Guerdy recognized the importance of being transparent about her experience.

Guerdy shared, “So, once we all realized that number one, I was gonna be okay at the end of the whole treatment, I said to myself, ‘This could be a teaching moment and an awareness moment for the audience.’ And that’s when I said, let’s just do it because the timing was really in sync where I just had gotten diagnosed when the cameras were going up and I said, ‘If I share the good, I need to also share the bad.’”

Using her platform for good

Guerdy explained that she felt compelled to use her platform on Bravo for positive change. She wanted to show people that a cancer diagnosis isn’t an ending. She also wanted to represent for Black women, who are disproportionately impacted by the disease.

“That was what solidified that decision for me, because of the fact that 42% of Black women are prone to dying more because of the disease, either because [a] lack of insurance or lack of caretaking, or just not wanting to know and face the truth because they maybe have too much on their plate already and they just don’t wanna get checked,” Guerdy explained.

The RHOM star said that despite the troubling diagnosis, she felt like “the chosen one” because of her Housewives platform. Now, she’s excited to share her story with the world in Season 6.

You can watch Guerdy’s story unfold on Real Housewives of Miami, Wednesday nights at 9/8c.
