Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards divorced in 2005. Denise filed for divorce because their nearly three-year-long union was not working out. Unfortunately, her filing turned Denise into the villain in the public court of opinion. Charlie was the main star in their family at this time, so the stars aligned in his corner, not hers. Therefore, Denise had to hustle to start clearing her name, a feat she eventually won.
Denise Richards’ acting career suffered after Charlie Sheen divorce
Making an appearance on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast, Denise opened up about her decades-old divorce from Charlie. Currently starring on Denise Richards & Her Wild Things, Denise did not hold back anything on this podcast. In contrast, during their divorce, silence was her preferred pathway.
“I went through so much with my divorce from Charlie that it affected my career,” Denise began. She struggled to find work in the entertainment industry because people saw her as a scorned woman “trying to take down Charlie Sheen,” she added. When Denise filed, Charlie was a lead principal on Two and a Half Men. Therefore, his influence and power saw Charlie receiving support from the studios, not her, Denise explained.
“I also had two daughters,” Denise added, noting that Eloise had yet to enter the picture as her third beloved child. So, Denise needed to return to work to support her family, but her divorce caused a few roadblocks within the industry. Needing to take control of this unfair narrative, Denise found her vehicle via reality television. In 2008, Denise Richards: It’s Complicated was born, helping to show the world who she was.
Her plan worked. The tabloids ceased printing negative headlines about her, and the acting tides began turning in her favor shortly after this series aired. Their divorce was “difficult,” Denise stressed. However, being able to present herself in this manner made people realize that she was never a villain in her failed marriage, which she appreciated.
Denise Richards & Her Wild Things is streaming on Peacock.
