American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, tragically passed away on August 7, 2025. He was 48 years old. Kelly shares two children with Brandon: a daughter, River, and a son, Remington. The couple was married from 2013 until 2020. Brandon also had two other children, Savannah and Seth, with his ex-wife, Melissa Ashworth.
Since his death from melanoma, which is a type of skin cancer, more details about Brandon’s life have come to light. And that includes that he found love again with Kelly’s former assistant.
Brittney Jones was Brandon Blackstock’s “soulmate” and moved to Montana with him in 2020
In Brandon’s obituary, Brittney Marie Jones was described as his “beautiful and loving partner in life and business.” The obituary also stated that the couple “started building a life, building companies, and working tirelessly to create Headwaters Livestock Auction and what will live on as his legacy, The Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana.”
A family representative shared a statement announcing Brandon’s death. “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years,” the statement read. “He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family.”
According to Brittney’s LinkedIn, she worked as a production assistant for Kelly from 2016 until 2018. Then, in late 2018, Brittney’s role transitioned to an “assistant managed day-to-day artist schedule for Kelly Clarkson.” Plus, she also worked for Brandon as an executive management assistant.
In June 2020, Kelly filed for divorce. Then, Brittney became an executive assistant for Brandon’s ranch in Montana, the V Bar B Cattle Co., the same month. In 2022, the talk show host and Brandon’s tumultuous divorce was finalized.
Meanwhile, Brandon’s illness was kept under wraps. However, Kelly suddenly canceled her Vegas residency, announcing that her ex-husband was “ill” and that she needed to be with her children. This was the first hint that Brandon was dealing with a serious illness.
