We don’t have to explain Tom Sandoval’s controversial past on reality TV. But, it’s worth acknowledging what he’s doing on reality television now. The Vanderpump Rules alum is focusing on his one true passion: music.

His band Tom Sandoval & The Most Extras shocked the world when they auditioned for America’s Got Talent Season 20. Not only did their performance get a standing ovation from the crowd, but it earned them four yeses to continue in the competition.

Reality Tea got the chance to sit down with Tom to chat about his AGT, his band’s upcoming tour, and more. Here’s what he revealed…

Tom is “grateful” for the public’s second chance

Once dubbed “the most hated man in America”, people are now singing a different tune about Tom. After the band’s audition, once-critics have turned into some of the band’s most adoring fans.

“I’m so grateful for the reaction that I’ve gotten from the public. It’s been really cool and encouraging,” he reflects.

Tom did share, though, that he did have some concerns going into the talent competition.

“I was very reluctant when I was asked about AGT from the band manager, drummer Jason. I was like, ‘No, I don’t wanna do that, I don’t wanna be picked apart like that’.”

“Performing in front of judges, its a form of art and expression. I was very worried about that, but I’m glad I did it because this is one of the coolest experiences of my life and I will remember it for the rest of my life.”

There are a whopping 44 contestants advancing to the quarterfinals this season. From youth choirs to dance troupes, it’s truly anyone’s game. Tom knows that the completion is fierce … even if he doesn’t know their names.

“There was this girl who came 20 years ago, and is now there for 20 years later, she’s pregnant,” he states, referring to Jessica Sanchez.

He also referenced The BoykinZ, the four-piece girl group made up of sisters, adding that, “there’s like an all Black country band that’s going on, like, that’s really cool. I love seeing that.”

“There’s so many different types of entertainment too, not just music. It’s gonna be a really cool variety show, that’s what I love about it.”

Onto the AGT live shows and beyond

Tonight (August 19) is the big night. It’s the first round of live shows, and Tom & The Most Extras are up.

“We’ve still made some last minute changes. We’re incorporating some new stuff,” Tom explains. “There’s been some wardrobe changes so it’s been very nerve wracking, but I’m sure it’s going to come together and it’s gonna be amazing.”

If AGT has made fans want to see the band perform live too, they are in luck. Exactly a month from now, Tom & The Most Extras are embarking on their nationwide Fall 2025 tour.

“I’m really excited about that. It’s gonna be a great tour. We got like 20 plus shows I believe we’re doing and this is just gonna be like just a great practice.”

Ultimately, our chat was cut short when a certain Jax Taylor called his good friend Tom. Sandoval took the call, and our time was up when he returned. Sadly, he didn’t divulge any juice as to their quick chat. Perhaps it was about Jax being dropped from BravoCon?

Nonetheless, it’s clear that the band frontman is in good spirits going into the live shows.

America’s Got Talent airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
