No one is immune to the allure of reality TV. This includes powerhouse filmmaker James Gunn. The creative force behind Guardians of the Galaxy and Superman shared that he enjoys reality TV, especially shows like Love Island.
This is not surprising. James has got his finger on the pulse, and the truth is, reality television is huge and it’s a big part of the current cultural zeitgeist. It’s no wonder he’s seen his fair share of shows. Some he enjoys with his wife, Jen, and others he watches alone.
Movie director James Gunn is also a huge fan of Big Brother
James guested on The Viall Files with Nick Viall (no stranger to reality TV) to talk about his movies, his childhood, how he writes, and how he loves watching reality television.
“What we do is, I work all day, then Jen and I eat, then we go downstairs and we watch a TV show or two,” James shared (at the 1:30:32 mark). “Then she goes to sleep. I smoke a cigar, and I continue watching reality TV. So I watch a bunch of shows she doesn’t watch, like Love Island.”
The director continued, “Like, Jen doesn’t watch Love Island. But I watch every Love Island! I watch them all.”
He went on to share that he wasn’t caught up with the UK version (though he thinks he got spoiled at the ending). He did, however, finish the US version. Wonder what he thought about the outcome or about Huda Mustafa’s famous “Mamacita” moment. He did reveal, though, that he thought Love Island USA Season 6 was top tier!
But Love Island isn’t the only show he watches. He revealed that he also watches Big Brother with his wife. “We’re watching Big Brother now,” he said. “We’re frustrated with Rachel.” He even said that he’s become online friends with the previous winner, Taylor Hale.
He even likened Taylor to Nick by saying, “She reminds me of you in your season,” James said. “Because you were unjustly picked on in the first season of The Bachelor, I felt. And she was the same in her season of Big Brother.”
That must have been a gratifying moment for Nick! As for James, if he had to list his fave reality shows, they would include Love Island, Big Brother, Traitors, and Survivor (his all-time favorite).
