When Sister Wives star Christine Brown used oxycodone, a well-known pain medication, she quickly found herself addicted to this Schedule II controlled substance. Following her knee surgery, this medication took away all of her symptoms. So, it evolved into something that Christine relied heavily on during her healing journey. Now, Christine is speaking out about this period in her life. And she is doing so via her new memoir, Sister Wife.
Christine Brown opened up about the addiction in her new memoir, Sister Wife
In her memoir, Sister Wife, Christine revealed that she had been privately battling an addiction to oxycodone during filming. As she shared on these pages and also with PEOPLE, in 2016, she blew out her knee. “I tore my ACL and my meniscus, and I had to have surgery. [My then-husband] Kody [Brown] brought me home from the hospital and then prepared to leave.”
Kody dropped the ball, but her mom and “daughters stayed to help. I had never taken oxycodone before — if something hurt, I took ibuprofen or aspirin. Real pain indicates that something’s wrong, and if I take something that masks the problem, I’m not going to fix the problem, so I generally avoid it. With the surgery, I had already fixed the problem, and it hurt, so I took my meds,” she explained.
Right away, Christine realized that oxycodone “gave me the best high I ever felt. I was on top of the world, and I could accomplish everything!”
While she was only on this medication “for a month, the effects of it lasted at least six. I didn’t feel normal. I didn’t feel okay for so long,” she continued.
Back then, Christine felt embarrassed about her plight. But now, it is time to “revisit” her “addiction,” she stressed. And to her fans, Christine advises, “oxy is a terrible, addictive thing if you don’t need it.”
