Joy Behar is a multi-talented entertainer. She’s had a long, successful career as a comedian. She is also a playwright. However, she is best known for her role on The View. She has been on the panel since the show first premiered in 1997. She’s been the Democratic talking head throughout the years, unafraid to speak her mind about politics. She’s especially vocal when her Republican counterparts push back.
Joy’s impact on The View earned her a Daytime Emmy in 2009. She’s always a fan-favorite, providing comedic relief when needed. She recently shared that she has no intention of leaving the talk show any time soon. It’s been a staple in her career.
However, more than once, the option to stay was not in her hands. One of her colleagues, a high-ranking one at that, wanted to let her go, enter Barbara Walters.
Behar says “they begged” her to return to The View after Barbara Walters fired her
Barbara was one of the most celebrated journalists and television personalities, played a big role on The View. She wasn’t simply a member of the panel; she created and produced the show. She served as a co-host from the show’s start in 1997 until 2014. While she and Joy had a great rapport on TV, Barbara wanted to let her go more than once.
Joy recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live, telling host Andy Cohen about the experience. “She fired me twice, actually,” she said. The firing “had something to do with a Democrat and a Republican,” she shared. When it came time to share the news on air, Barbara had a change of heart.
“Tell them you changed your mind,” Barbara said. Joy replied, “Barbara, you just fired me. How am I supposed to change my mind?” Barbara regretted the decision to let her go. Joy would leave again in 2013 but returned two years later. “They didn’t just bring me back, they begged me. Let’s be clear,” she shared.
