The premiere of Season 34 of Dancing with the Stars is almost here. And some contestants are sharing their feelings about hitting the ballroom. Conservationist Robert Irwin, who is paired with pro Witney Carson, has some jitters.
Fans have enjoyed seeing the fun behind-the-scenes content created by the DWTS contestants and their partners. Robert posted a video via social media, testing Witney’s knowledge of Australian slang. It was hilarious! Of course, Robert and Witney have also been rehearsing as the competitor’s first live dance approaches. And Robert isn’t afraid to admit that he feels a bit out of his element.
DWTS is scarier than crocodiles for Robert Irwin
Robert plans to honor his late father, well-known conservationist Steve Irwin, by channeling his father’s zest for life. Steve died in 2006 following a stingray attack. Plus, Robert’s sister, Bindi Irwin, took home the Mirrorball in Season 21. So, Robert has ties to DWTS.
“Look, if you think you’re bad at dancing, multiply that by 100!” Robert told PEOPLE. “I’ve never tried it, I don’t wear sequins, I’m not in this world at all. So it’s super new, and it’s terrifying, but it’s also awesome.” He continued, “It’s an adrenaline rush. I’m not really living if I’m not on the edge just a little bit.” Crikey!
Meanwhile, Robert spends most of his time at his family’s zoo in Australia. “We don’t know what tomorrow holds, so you have to take calculated risks, you have to have fun, enjoy what you’re doing, and give everything 100 percent,” Robert explained. “But you also have to be sensible about it – my family always tries to remind me of that!” Of course, most people wouldn’t consider wrangling around with crocodiles “sensible.”
During his time on DWTS, Robert hopes to share his passion for wildlife conservation. “Yes, here are all the terrible things happening, but there’s still time. We can fix it,” Robert said.
Dancing with the Stars Season 34 will premiere on Tuesday, September 16, at 8 p.m. on ABC and Disney+. It will stream on Hulu the next day.
