As reality TV continues to grow, we see new generations of talent rising. Sometimes, when the timing is just right, you’ll see more than one generation shining. That’s what happens when you put together Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss, her mom “Mama Joyce” Jones, and her daughter Riley Burruss of Next Gen NYC.
The trio got together to dish on family life and success. It was nice to see three generations supporting one another. Mama Joyce has always supported Kandi. And now that Riley is finding her own reality TV success, Kandi is trying to pay it forward.
Riley Burruss calls Mama Joyce a “shade assassin”
Kandi credits “good communication” for Riley’s relatively drama-free youth and her closeness with Mama Joyce.
“I’m one of those moms where Riley could tell me anything,” Kandi shared with PEOPLE. She explained that the way she is with Riley stems from her own relationship with Mama Joyce. Kandi’s mom was supportive of her goals but also honest and had no problem telling her when something was off.
“I’m a straight shooter,” Joyce explained. “I don’t sugarcoat anything! If you don’t want the truth, don’t ask me.”
Riley agreed with her assessment and added with a laugh, “My grandma is a bit of a shade assassin.” That certainly explains where Kandi got her iconic straightforward attitude and, in a way, where Riley did as well.
The three women have had their turn in the Bravo spotlight, and their hard work has ensured their success in all their endeavors. Kandi especially credits Mama Joyce for letting her find her own way in her teens, including being part of a girl band and trying things out.
“She was so supportive,” Kandi shared. “As long as I kept my grades up, I could travel the world with the group. It’s different when you have a parent who allows you to try new things and encourages you.” And now she tries to be the same.
“My mom is clearly insanely powerful and talented,” Riley admitted. “Anytime I’m confused by something in the world, I call her because I don’t think anyone could give me a better answer than her.”
Granted, it’s not all smooth sailing. Three powerful women can lead to family fights along the way, but they all agree that they are quick to forgive (at least when it comes to one another!).
