The rapture hysteria may have gripped certain corners of the internet, but Sherri Shepherd wasn’t fooled. Not for a second time, anyway. The TV host shared she once got swept up in doomsday panic – and it landed her in jail.
Chat show host Sherri Shepherd once spent time in jail over the rapture
A viral online rumor claimed the world would end on September 23. You may have noticed that it didn’t.
While many became convinced the prediction could be true, Sherri Shepherd wasn’t having any of this rapture business. She’s been there, done that. The chat show host revealed on her September 24 episode of Sherri that she’d been fooled by a doomsday prophecy before – and it didn’t end well for her.
She confessed: “I have been through this before. I used to be in a religion that told me that the rapture was coming. They told us to get our house in order. And I said, ‘Why? I’m not going to need a house where I am going. I don’t need those worldly possessions.’”
Unfortunately, Sherri believed the theory. As a result, she stopped paying her bills and taxes. She joked: “Why would I show up to court when the world is about to end and I’m about to get taken up to heaven? Jesus don’t care about no parking tickets!”
Unsurprisingly, it didn’t end well – she ended up being arrested. She concluded: “I went to jail for eight days and because I fell for the Rapture. I became a hardened criminal.”
The rapture rumor is thought to have been started by South African pastor Joshua Mhlakela earlier this year. Somehow, the internet did its thing and the idea that the world was going to end on September 23 really took off. On TikTok, the Rapture hashtag amassed more than 300,000 videos, including many clips of people claiming to have sold everything they own.
It’s a good thing the rapture was fake, as it means Sherri still has time for that second shot on Dancing with the Stars.
